So here it is Friday again. This weekend I'm taking a break and I am not Tweeting. I am not blogging. I am not promoting my book or anyone else's book. This weekend I'm doing anything and everything that has nothing whatsoever to do with being an author.

When this kind of emotion falls over me, I'm usually at the level of "overwhelmed" by what's going on.

How many of you out there often feel the need to totally, like 100%, do something different? Forget all of your goals, toss all of your lists. And what do you choose to do instead of that usual stuff? Give me some of your ideas. I'm even tired of my usual non-writing activities.

  1. I am having that feeling right now. I don't want to do anything that has to do with being a librarian. I just want to get away and relax and not think about that!

  2. So what are you going to do, Brain Lair? Find a hammock? Go on a Caribbean Cruise? Climb into bed and pull the sheets over your head?

    I need some ideas. Help!

  3. When I'm in that kind of a mood I drive somewhere I've never been before. Hike someplace new. Go to a restaurant I've been wanting to try. The key for me is new and AWAY. I hope you find some peace this weekend, Lee!

  4. When I feel overwhelmed, I like to take a walk and just let my thoughts wander. Listening to the birds sing is calming to me. Or if it's too hot or cold to walk, I play the piano. I can play as loud or as soft as I want to and escape into another world for a time.

  5. Lee,
You have so many great ways of de-stressing that I always look to you for advice.
Sometimes, I take drives to a new place too. If I'm lucky I'll get lost, which is fun as long as I don't have to be someplace. Also listening to a completely new type of music works. I look for something very un-me and try to imagine what my life would be like if that music was part of my past. Would I be less of a worrier if my parents filled their house with new age music or more of a world traveler if I was exposed earlier to Romanian panpipes? More spiritual if I heard more Buddhist or Gregorian chants? is a great resource for new tunes.

um, Brain Lair, I noticed from your tweets that you're spending the weekend at ALA. Not exactly sure if that's getting away from the librarian stuff :) Hope you find a way to do that soon.

  6. Okay! I'm back. I took all of your advice and then some. Ahhhhhh.

  7. I hear you loud and clear. I'm Bipolar so my moods go up and down like a rollercoaster and some days its hard to get out of bed while others I'm awake all night with insomnia, so many ideas coming out of my brain that I can't type fast enough (this is somehow a good thing for me)
Anyway, sometimes you just have to take a break from it all. BREATHE deeply, let your thougts focus on something or everyone else but take the time FOR YOU. Have a bubble bath, sit outside and read, tell everyone to go find something else to do. You just have to do your own thing to get your mind back in place.
    Hope this helps.
